In chapter 4, Mislead By Mice I learned many important concepts when it come to treating, experimenting, testing with mice. Although they’re not very accurate when it comes to see how it affect a human after being tested on a mice, scientist still continued this method. Although some scientists have expressed uncertainty and recognized the reason to stop yet continue like Neuroscience professor Gregory Petsko on page 82, ” The animal models are a disaster… what if the models are not wrong but irrelevant.” This made me very uneasy. Thinking how many human trials have been made yet still have not found a cure, to ALS and Alzheimer’s as what this professor specializes in. To what extend will we stop in.
The portrayal of the scientists is very blunt. Here scientists admit of their uneasiness which makes them appear more human unlike the scientists in the media, they say what people want to hear, for more publicity and/or false news wanting to be brought attention to. This explains steps that are taken when experimenting which I found out are all very vital when experimenting. It was explained that one tiny error can affect the mice on their own. Compared to the media, it is all explained from birds eye point of view, very bland.
From what I read in the book, I honestly would not do anything else different. As I mentioned before everything is very precise. I would need to study this matter very deep in, to possibly have a different opinion.
In this chapter, I was also astonished of how much technology has advanced and did not even know. For example, Geraldine Hamilton explained, “We can actually see a single white blood cell. It comes in, it sticks, it wiggles itself through the cell membranes . . . and you can see it coming out on the other side and engulfing the bacteria.” I found this section very fascinating and amusing, very enjoyable, it was very pleasant to be described her awe expression, comical even when looking at the screen.
When searching up this topic about experimenting with mice and all and about. I found this website about scientists discovering a way to induce Alzheimer’s like symptom to mice which I found very interesting, yet very suspecting its credibility.
